UNIVERSAL TORAH: MISHPATIM

UNIVERSAL TORAH: MISHPATIM

By Rabbi Avraham Greenbaum

Torah Reading: MISHPATIM Exodus 21:1-24:18
Special additional Torah reading for Shabbat Shekalim: Exodus 30:11-16
Haftara for Shabbat Shekalim: II Kings 12:1-17 (Sephardi ritual: II Kings 11:17-12:17).

As indicated by its name of MISHPATIM, "the Laws", much of our parshah is made up of laws -- the basics of the Mosaic code as they apply equally to all Israelite men and women at all times and in all areas of life. These laws flesh out the details of the code for life implied in the Ten Commandments of which we read in last week's parshah of YISRO.

THERE IS NO "BEFORE" OR "AFTER" IN THE TORAH

One of the principles of rabbinic Torah commentary is that "there is no 'before' or 'after' in the Torah". This means that the order in which things are told in the Torah does not always correspond to the order in which they happened -- events may appear out of sequence.

Understanding this principle may help unravel some confusion that can easily arise from a casual reading of last week's parshah and this week's. On the surface, it appears as if the laws contained in our present parshah of MISHPATIM were given to Moses "after" the "main" event of the Divine revelation and giving of the Ten Commandments in the presence of all the people, as recounted in last week's parshah of YISRO. Thus, at the end of last week's parshah we read that "the people stood from afar and Moses approached into the darkness." (Ex. 20:18). Directly afterwards we read that G-d gave Moses a number of commandments, including those relating to the sacrificial altar in the Temple, with which YISRO concluded. Our parshah of MISHPATIM then follows on immediately with the words: "AND these are the commandments that you shall place before them." This makes it appear as if the detailed laws in MISHPATIM were given to Moses "after" the divine revelation to all the people at Sinai.

However, at the end of MISHPATIM, after all the laws, we read in Ex. 24:1-18 a narrative portion that recounts for a second time, and in a different way, the event of the Divine revelation at Sinai about which we already read in YISRO Ex.19-20:1-18. This concluding section of our present parshah goes back in time to Moses' "negotiations" with the people in the days PRIOR to the Giving of the Torah. "And Moses came and told the people all the words of G-d and ALL THE LAWS, and all the people answered with one voice and said, All the words that G-d speaks we will do." (Ex. 24:3). The Torah then goes on to tell how, on the actual day of the Giving of the Torah, the first-born, acting as priests, offered "converts'" sacrifices on behalf of all the people, who affirmed their acceptance of the Torah in the words, "We shall do and we shall hear" (Ex. 24:7). Moses then sprinkled the blood of the sacrifices on the altar and on the people to signify the striking of the Covenant.

Which WERE "all the laws" that Moses told the people PRIOR to the "Giving of the Torah" -- the laws of which they declared their acceptance??? Rashi (on Ex. 24:3) tells us that these are the Seven Commandments of the Sons of Noah, Shabbos, honoring father and mother, the Red Heiffer and DINIM (laws between man and man) which were given at Marah (BESHALACH, Ex. 15:25).

In fact, these DINIM are none other than the very laws of murder, manslaughter, theft, robbery, damages, court procedure, etc. that take up the major part of our parshah of MISHPATIM. It turns out that these laws too are written in the Torah "out of sequence" -- for they were already given at Marah prior to the "Giving of the Torah" at Sinai.

If many of the laws contained in MISHPATIM were actually given at Marah, why are they written here in our parshah out of sequence, "sandwiched", as it were, between the main account of the giving of the Torah in YISRO and the second account, at the end of MISHPATIM?

Rashi's opening comment on our parshah comes to draw out the lessons implicit in the placement of these detailed laws directly after the account of the Divine revelation at Sinai, immediately following the commandments relating to the Temple altar. "AND these are the laws" (Ex. 21:1) -- Rashi states: "The word AND comes to add these (ensuing) commandments to the first (i.e. the Ten Commandments). Just as the first ones came from Sinai, so do these come from Sinai. And why is the section of DINIM positioned immediately after the section dealing with the altar? To teach you to position the Sanhedrin next to the altar" (Rashi ad loc.).

The Sanhedrin is the assembly of Torah sages whose mission is to teach how the laws of the Torah apply in practice in their generation. The appointed place of the Sanhedrin is on the Temple Mount, in the "Chamber of Hewn Stone" (LISHKAS HAGAZIS) adjacent to the main Temple courtyard, with the sacrificial altar in its center.

The altar is where man offers his KORBAN -- his penitence and prayers, through which he comes close (KAROV) to G-d. But good intentions are not enough. Adjacent to the altar of prayer and devotion must be the brain-center of law and organization, through which the teachings of religion and the revelation of the divine are carried into our day-to-day life. This is accomplished through the practice of HALACHOT, "goings" -- ways of "going" in accordance with G-d's law as we go about our daily business in the world.

THE TORAH CODE

After the heights of G-dly revelation as recounted in last week's parshah, MISHPATIM plunges us into the intricate depths of the Torah code of law. The laws revealed at Marah prior to the "Giving of the Torah, together with those set forth in MISHPATIM and all the other laws hose written elsewhere in the Torah are all integral parts of the single unified code that was revealed at Sinai (see Rashi on Leviticus 25:1). Since G-d is perfect unity, the entire code was implied in a single flash with the first DIBUR ("word") "I am HaShem your G-d" (Ex. 20:2). Corresponding to the Ten Sefiros that underlie all creation, the Ten Words (ASERES HADIBROS, the "Ten Commandments") constitute the underlying fundamentals of the entire Mosaic code. In a sense, "All the rest is commentary" -- the six hundred and thirteen separate commandments that make up the code are all details implicit in the essential unity of G-d. All are necessary in order to reveal that unity to the world.

Many in the world pay lip-service to the Ten Commandments, but we do not have to look very far to see that practically all of them are violated in one way or another every day by people all over the world. Societies everywhere are rife with crime and violence, sexual immorality, slander, envy and jealousy. Hardly anyone in the world knows about Shabbos, one day a week of complete rest from technology and business, a day to be with G-d.

The many laws in MISHPATIM constitute the core of the Mosaic code, teaching us how to BE WITH G-D in ALL our involvements and activities in this world.

It is appropriate for the nation that came to Sinai from slavery in Egypt that the code of MISHPATIM opens with the laws of slavery. The law of MITZRAIM, Egypt, the place of METZAR, constriction, was that no slave could ever go free. But the first of the detailed laws of n the Torah code tells us that the opposite is the case. The Hebrew slave must work for his master for six years, but in the seventh year he goes free. If he chooses to stay on with his master after six years, he may do so, but only until the fiftieth year, the YOVEL ("jubilee"). Time goes in cycles. A person may fall low, but eventually the cycle swings around, and he comes up. The cyclical nature of time implicit in the fourth commandment (six days of work followed by Shabbos) is revealed in the laws of slavery in MISHPATIM to be a redemptive quality. The Sabbath day, the Sabbatical year and the Jubilee (after 7 x 7 = 49 years) all have the power to free man from the various kinds of slavery into which he falls.

Slavery in the literal sense is still widespread in many parts of the world. In addition, many who are supposedly "free" are also "slaves" in one sense or another, whether to their circumstances, to those around them, to deep-seated inner blocks, to urges and desires, to the dictates of the media, fashion, advertisers, etc. etc.

The Holy Zohar, whose commentary on MISHPATIM is exceptionally lengthy, reveals in detail how the laws of slavery in our parshah contain the laws and principles by which souls are re-incarnated in this world. Souls are obliged to "serve" in different incarnations order to pay off debts incurred through sins and failures in previous incarnations. All of the other detailed commandments in the Torah also contain mystical allusions. For the revealed code of Torah law, which applies to our lives and everyday business and other affairs, is one and the same as the code through which G-d governs the entire universe on all its different levels. All is unity.

Besides slavery, the code of laws contained in MISHPATIM includes the basic laws of marriage, murder, manslaughter, kidnap, willful injury, willful and unwitting damages of person and property, theft, negligence, loans, law court procedure, ritual and other laws. The code concludes with the laws of the Sabbatical year, the Sabbath and annual festivals, all of which bring redemption into the cycle of time.

At the end of the parshah we read: "And HaShem said to Moses, go up to Me to the mountain and be there, and I will give you the Tablets of Stone, the Torah, the Mitzvah that I have written to teach them" (Ex. 24:12).

The Talmud explains: "THE TABLETS are the Ten Commandments. THE TORAH means the written Torah ("MIKRA"); THE MITZVAH means the Mishneh (=Oral Law); THAT I HAVE WRITTEN -- these are the prophets and the holy writings (NEVI'IM and KESUVIM). TO TEACH THEM -- this is the Gemara, (the deductive principles of the Torah). Teaching that they were all given to Moses from Sinai." (Berachos 5a).

The written Torah, as we read it in the weekly parshah, is an integral unity with the oral Torah. Thus our parshah of MISHPATIM contains the foundations of the laws expounded at length in four out of the six orders of the Mishneh -- the Oral Law. Thus in MISHPATIM we encounter some of the main laws of the order of ZERA'IM ("Seeds" - agriculture), including Terumah, the tithe for the priest, and the Sabbatical year. We also encounter the fundamental laws of the order of MO'ED (the seasons and festivals), of NASHIM (marriage) and of NEZIKIN (damages, property, loans, legal procedure).

At the end of MISHPATIM we read "And Moses came into the cloud and he went up to the mountain, and Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights" (Ex. 24:18). Immediately afterward, in next week's parshah of TERUMAH, the Torah begins to explain the form of the Sanctuary, the prototype Temple, and how it was constructed and inaugurated in the wilderness. This will take up the remainder of Exodus, after which we enter Leviticus and the world of sacrifices and ritual purity. Sacrifices and ritual purity are the subjects of KODOSHIM (holy items) and TAHAROS (purity), the last two orders of the Mishneh.

This Shabbos, after the synagogue Torah reading, we bless the coming month of Adar - a month in which the MAZAL of Israel is ascendant.

MESHENICHNAS ADAR, MARBIN BESIMCHAH!!! "When Adar arrives, we maximize SIMCHAH!!!"

Shabbat Shalom!

HAMAS STOLE SEVEN TONS OF WEAPONS FROM UN IN GAZA

Hamas Stole Seven Tons of Weapons from UN in Gaza

by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu

(IsraelNN.com) Hamas stole tons of explosives, weapons and unexploded bombs that it was guarding for the United Nations, which gathered the ordnance during Operation Cast Lead. The Hamas guard has disappeared along with the bombs and explosives.

The discovery of missing weapons, first revealed by British Broadcasting Corp. (BBC), is the latest in a number of embarrassing episodes for the U.N. and United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). Israeli military spokesman Peter Lerner charged Hamas with "commandeering" the bombs, explosives and artillery shells.

Israel previously has proven that Hamas has used U.N. facilities to attack Israeli civilians and soldiers, and the terrorist organization has routinely stolen humanitarian aid delivered to U.N. groups.

"We are anxious to get the return of this ordnance," U.N. Jerusalem spokesman Richard Miron told the BBC. "It's clearly extremely dangerous and needs to be disposed of in a safe manner.

The U.N. has been trying to remove and neutralize the explosives but has charged Israel with delaying the work by not permitting entry of equipment and not approving an area for detonation.

However, Israel two weeks ago approved a storage site near Gaza City for three one-ton bombs and eight smaller ones which did not explode after being dropped by Israeli planes. U.N. officials stored the bombs along with several large artillery shells in the warehouse and discovered on Sunday that the weapons were missing.

Several bombs that the U.N. collected have been drowned in water and then buried in Gaza's sand.

VICHY GOVERNMENT FOUND RESPONSIBLE FOR DEPORTING JEWS IN WW II

Vichy government found responsible for deporting Jews in WWII

PARIS - France's top judicial body on Monday recognized the French government's responsibility for the deportation of Jews during World War II, the clearest such recognition to date of the state's role in the Holocaust.

The Council of State found that the government of Nazi-occupied France at the time held the responsibility for deportations that led to anti-Semitic persecution

The decision released on Monday also found that the deportation had been compensated for since 1945, apparently ruling out any reparations for deportees or their families
Thousands of Jews were deported from France to Nazi death camps during the occupation. After the war, subsequent French governments took decades to acknowledge any role played by the collaborationist Vichy regime in the Holocaust.

A Paris court had sought the Council of State's opinion on a request by the daughter of a deportee who died at Auschwitz for reparations from the French state. She was also asking for material and moral damages for her own personal suffering during and after the occupation.

The council left it up to the Paris court to rule on her request.

But in its decision, the council said that it ruled that because the acts and actions by the state led to the deportation of people the Vichy regime believed to be Jews, (they) constituted errors and became its responsibility.

The council called for a solemn recognition of the state's responsibility and of collective prejudice suffered by the deportees.

Today, France has western Europe's largest Jewish community, numbering approximately 500,000.

NUCLEAR IRAN - TODAY'S "ISLAMIC REPUBLIC"

Blogmaster: Iran is not only a threat to Israel and peace in the Middle East; Iran's Mullahs threaten the stability of the entire world. Everything must be done to destroy this despotic government and allow moderate and Modern Iranians to move their country peaceably into the 21st Century... before Iran becomes a sheet of glass.

Chaos, Crisis & Terror Serves the Islamic Republic

Amil Imani
February 16, 2009

As the Islamic Revolution completed its third decade, it would not be too difficult to realize the reality and the fruits of its mismanagement during its imperial and revolutionary eras. Throughout the three decades of its existence, the Islamic Republic has managed, notably, to produce more hunger, extreme frustration and anger, prostitution at a record pace, drug addiction beyond control, child execution without any regard to the international human rights bylaws. There are many reports regarding cases of child sexual abuse and molestation reaching epidemic proportions. Prosecution and imprisonment of the innocent people and systematic and illegal abuse of detainees and hundreds of gruesome acts have also been reported.

The genocidal Islamists have been doing all they can to completely wipe out the Baha’is in Iran as well as everywhere else in the world that their blood-drenched hand can reach. The Islamic government condones and promotes every measure of oppression against the Baha'is. The Islamists don’t even spare the dead. They bulldoze and even uproot the trees in Baha’is cemeteries. Harassment of other religious minorities is prevalent and torturing innocent people beyond recognition is part of their modus operandi. They routinely hang dissidents and amputate the limbs of anyone for petty theft. They are responsible for the unmitigated poverty in the oil-rich country, sex slaves in the Persian Gulf region and the raping of children as young as 2 years of age.

The Islamic Republic also has started a nuclear program, not for peaceful purposes, as they claim, but only to prolong their unwanted existence long enough to get their hands on the bomb so that they can feel invincible and continue their control over the armless Iranian people and ultimately export their version of Shi’a Islam and terrorism around the globe.

What is the likelihood that the ruling Mullahs will actually use their new toy? If they remain in power long enough to have it, they are very likely to use it, in one form or another. At the very least, they will use the bomb for blackmail and intimidation in the region. Not even the all-out nuclear exchange can be ruled out. Islam is a religion centered on death with the faithful eyes fixed on the afterlife and its promised eternal pleasures. If the faithful kills, he goes to Allah’s paradise; if he gets killed, he goes to Allah’s paradise. An urgent warning to the people of the world: stop the Islamic Republic nuclear program now, or face eradication from the face of the earth and I am not in any mood to make you laugh.

What does the Islamic Republic do to cover up its crimes against humanity? They immediately create chaos and crisis. In other words, they create smoke and mirrors and push the dust under the rug again as they did when the Islamists took the American diplomats as hostages for 444 days and during Iran and Iraq war and recent Israeli war with Hamas.
Ironically, the first victims of the chaos and crises doctrine have always been the Iranian people. They are trying to distract the world from their nuclear intention as they did during the Gaza crisis. They took the attention away from their nuclear program.

Since its inception, the regime has stigmatized, victimized and murdered people without any due process of law. They particularly go after the writers, poets and artists to harass. The first Islamic Revolutionary Judge, Sheik Sadegh Khalkhali, an infamous psychopath, did not hesitate to demand the execution of intellectuals such as Ahmad Shamlou, a famous Iranian author who was well-known for his non-adherence to any political party and his non-involvement in any political activity. Khalkhali was responsible for many arbitrary executions. According to Judge Abdolkarim Ardibili, former President of the Supreme Court, many defense lawyers were arrested, imprisoned and in at least one case, executed.

Currently, the regime, on the slightest suspicion will arrest, convict and execute. Few people would deny any longer that Islam and its variants mean, in practice, bloody terrorism, deadly purges, lethal actions, forced ‘hijabs,” show trials and genocide. It is a widespread plague upon humanity. It is disguised as religion and has penetrated our democracies with the aim of replacing civility and liberty with the barbarism of theocracy and Sharia. Islam’s multi-prong attack aims to destroy all that liberty offers.

On September 19, 1981, in an address broadcasted on radio and television, Ayatollah Moussavi, the Revolutionary Procurator General, stated, “to kill the people who stand against this regime and its just Imam (Khomeini) is a prescribed duty according to Islamic laws. If they are captured, our men will not let them eat and sleep for a few months. The trial of these people is in the streets. I also order the city prosecutors to do the same; otherwise they themselves will be punished” reported by Ghiam newspaper, Tehran, June 28, 1981. The flair for hanging has not stopped since then, in fact, it has immensely increased.

The Mullahs presently ruling Iran are faced with monumental threats. Internally, the great majority of the populace is against their misrule. Labor unions, teachers associations, student groups, religious and ethnic minorities, journalists and many others have suffered and continue to suffer inordinate hardship under the heavy-handed Mullahs and their front men. Externally, they are engaged in brinksmanship with the United States and Israel, while trying to wrestle the mantle of Islamic leadership from the Sunni Saudis and their Wahhabi cabal and President Obama intends to negotiate with these criminals rather than the legitimate owners of the country, the Iranian people. He will also fail miserably as did his four predecessors.

The Islamist apologists call me all kinds of unspeakable names. That's all they can do, since they are unable to hang me from high cranes at public squares as they do so to everyone, even teenagers. These mullahs -- that includes the non-turbaned creatures working as the akhoond's front men and pawns--are agents of destruction and death. They have a ball plundering Iran and are looking forward to their rewards in Allah's paradise for their dastardly acts here on earth. As they see it, it is a win-win proposition for them.
Sadly, huge numbers of Iranians are hoodwinked into supporting these leeches and believing in their pie-in-the-sky promises. It is time for Muslims to wake up and toss this ideology of destruction and death out of office before we all are vanished.

Centuries ago, a group of newly converted Muslim savages from the Arabian Peninsula, ravaged my mother country, the present Iran, a cradle of civilization, the land of Cyrus the Great— the first author of the Human Rights Charter—. The upstanding Iranian people who lived by the Great Zoroaster’s triad of Goodly Thoughts, Goodly Speech, and Goodly Deeds stood no chance against the Muslim beasts who had been promised by Muhammad: if you kill, or you get killed, either way you will be admitted to Allah’s gloriously lush paradise for eternity in compensation. This pie-in-the-sky paradise of Allah, Muhammad intimated, includes among other things, rivers of milk and honey as well as 72 virgins for every male.

The invasion of my country was only the start of the tenacious scourge of Islam. Slaughtering people by hundreds of thousands at the time left the remainder of the Iranians little choice but to convert to the creed of this cult of violence. Choiceless millions converted to Islam and a few hundred thousand brave souls circled the wagon, so to speak, and held firm to their creed of light—the Zoroastrian faith. For centuries, the Zoroastrians paid heavily in all manner of ways under the rule of the converted Muslims; many were forced to leave for other lands such as India, while others were driven out of their habitats to marginal parts of the land.

Yet, all along, many Iranians revered the religion of their ancestors and resented the Arab-imposed creed.
Nonetheless, the virus of Islam had taken deep roots. As a result, a compromise evolved. The overwhelming majority of the Iranians, who had become some sort of generic Muslims, parted company with the original line of Sunni-Caliphate and adopted Shiism. The tragic history of Shiism appealed to the Iranians who felt great affinity, consciously or unconsciously, with the tragic suffering of the Imamate line at the hand of the mainstream Sunni Muslims.

Switching allegiance from one sect of the cult of death to another did little more than provide a venting opportunity to the victimized Iranians. They could not find it in themselves to get rid of the Islamic virus while it offered them a degree of relief, enabling them to vilify the mainstream Sunnis for inflicting them with the Islamic disease in the first place.

Fourteen hundred years of suffering is far too long for any people, although the Jews hold the record for that misfortune. The Jews have at long last returned to their homeland even though they are still encircled by the vicious Arab Islamists who would like nothing better than to drown every last one of them in the sea, similar to the way the Islamists forced our Zoroastrian people out of the country or the remaining few to the edges of the inhospitable desert.

With the passage of time, blaming the historical foreign invaders for our sorry plight failed as explanation. Re-playing the long-ago tragic drama of the Imams’ sufferings did little more than supply a superficial psychological relief. Real new enemy-making was in order to keep the victimization mentality alive and prevent the people from self-examination and finding the true culprit for their misery.

Sadly, the victimization mentality seems to have become an irreversible disease of our people, the Iranians. We have become a nation of easy answers. We ascribe blame liberally and do very little deep soul-searching. It is heartwarming to see that new flowers are blossoming in Iran. The new generation in Iran wants to distance itself from the Islamic butchers and embrace the ancient creed of Zoroasterism or other religions. They are beginning to feel and accept the fact that blaming others hasn’t done much to address our problems, just creating straw men to knock down.

Most Iranians, whose voices are not allowed to be heard in the West, have strongly condemned the blatant innumerable comments by the selected buffoon, the President Ahmadinejad calling for the destruction of the only democratic nation in the middle east, the State of Israel. The Islamic Republic of Iran’s President’s repeated threat to wipe out Israel from the map is ignored by some as an empty rhetoric of an unhinged fanatic. Yet, Ahmadinejad’s threats are far from the baseless saber-rattling of a zealot.

Ahmadinejad’s government has recently ordered the comprehensive gathering of data regarding the Baha’is and all their activities. This order is deeply troubling, since it is almost a replica of what another fascist, Hitler, did before launching the genocide of six million Jews and some four million other “undesirables”. Ahmadinejad is an Islamofascist whose aim is to have a practice run on the Iranian Baha’is before embarking on destroying the Jews and other “undesirables,” following in the footsteps of the German fuehrer.

Political correctness is the normal tongue of politicians. However, what is coming from the Islamic regime in Iran is an aculeate tongue from a self-appointed group of vigilantes imposing their views on others. Ahmadinejad, the ultra-conservative President of the Islamic Republic, after all, is a known former hostage taker, an assassin, and he has eliminated all his opponents and proven his loyalty to the Ayatollah Khamenei. Perhaps that is why Ayatollah Khamenei has selected him to his post. Ahmadinejad served in the ranks of the Revolutionary Guards during the 1980-1988 war with Iraq. He has also appointed fellow Revolutionary Guards’ members to the most key positions in his cabinet.

Inside the Revolutionary Guards, there exists an elite group called "Qods (Jerusalem) Force". Its mission is military operations (including terrorism) far beyond the boundaries of Iran. At the time, Ahmadinejad was a senior commander in the Quds Force. According to Al Sharq Al-Awsat, elements of the Qods Force have led operations against coalition forces in Iraq; other sources even contend that the Qods Force provided logistical help to the Zarqawi network of terror in the past.

During the recent Israeli war with terrorist Hamas, the Islamic Republic went through a panic mode again. They could not stand and watch the loss of one of their investments in the Israelis’ backyard, the Hamas terrorist group. What do they do, they create chaos and crises. They declared cyber war on Israel. They instigated a false crisis to bring the Arab world into the conflict and threatened them with retribution if they did not act. They offered a 2 million dollar bounty for President of Egypt, Husni Mobarak for not helping the Palestinians in the Gaza. They claimed 70,000 Iranian Basijis volunteered to carry out suicide bombings in Israel.

Ironically, a Persian reformist newspaper (Roozonline) accused Ahmadinejad’s government of using the Palestinian problem 'as weapon' against reformist bodies after he shut down a newspaper accused of reporting misinformation about Palestinian fighters in Gaza. An Iranian newspaper (Kargozaran), which defended Israel for protecting its citizens against the barrage of mortar attacks by Hamas terrorists, was also banned for portraying the Palestinian resistance as terrorists who cause the deaths of children and civilians by taking up positions in kindergartens and hospitals.

All this acrobatic propaganda by the Islamists in Iran were symbolic and did nothing to help the Hamas thugs, but only caused more anguish and death on the Iranian part. The Islamic Republic has been living on a chaos and crises doctrine for 30 years. Without it, it would have disappeared long ago.

Since coming to power 30 years ago, the founder of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Khomeini set the stage for absolute power through creating chaos and crisis. Chaos and crises have emerged as the new policy of the Islamic Republic. Khomeini was able to get the support of the poor and the bazaar merchants opposed to the shah, peasants, riffraff and uneducated mobs who called themselves students.

At the beginning of the revolution, while Iranian people were getting ready to obliterate Khomeini and his Islamic gang of terrorists, the American hostage crisis and 444 days captivity took place. This was a much-needed crisis for Khomeini and his gang to suppress the Iranian people’s aspirations for greater freedom, while challenging the “Great Satan”, which helped to solidify their position among the poor and most Muslim countries.

This chaos and crises escalated for eight more years as the Iraqis launched a surprise attack on Iran. As President select Ahmadinejad himself stated, this war was a blessing from God. This crucial eight-year war with Iraq allowed the Islamic Republic to take shape while continuing fabrications, lies, harassment, arrests, murders and intimidation of the Iranian people. If Saddam had not attacked Iran, more than likely, the Islamic regime would have been collapsed at its early stages. After all, people did not revolt so that they could have a tyrannical Islamic cult to rule over them.

After the war, the Islamic Republic continued its brutal purges, killing anyone perceived as opponent. The tyrannical and brutal regime imposed and forced millions of Iranians to run away from their homeland. The war left behind hundreds of thousands of Iranians dead or homeless. Now, the Islamic Republic needed another reason for chaos and crises to continue its mission of creating an Islamic nation. What better choice other than diverting the attention to the most detested nation in the heart of the Arab world, the State of Israel which has been involved in a conflict with the Palestinians for half a century!

When the revolution went sour and its children grew up, the Khomeini’s dream of making Iran a pure form of an Islamic nation collapsed. It simply backfired on the Islamists. The crown jewel of Islam simply did not fit the Persians. It never did and it never will. The vast majority of the population had already written them off, but the regime refuses to leave peacefully. Again, anytime they were on the verge of extinction, they created new or renewed chaos and crises.

In exile in the Iraqi holy city of Najaf, Khomeini published a collection of essays called - an Islamic government - (Velayat-e faqhi). This book had gone completely unnoticed by the general population. Ayatollah Khomeini was a harsh and brutal tyrant. His mission was to purge pre-Islamic vestiges and to create a true Islamic nation, something his heir Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his loyal disciple President Ahmadinejad have been dreaming about it.

With the selection of Mohammad Khatami, (the darling of the West), in August 1997 as the Islamic president, the world and especially the European countries immediately turned to appeasement policy, ignoring all the warning signs by the Iranian patriots and opposition groups. This alone gave the Islamic regime eight more precious years to secretly research and develop their Islamic bomb. The regime has emptied out the wealth of the nation in a hurry to develop the most devastating bomb, the nuclear bomb and the missiles to deliver them.

Ironically, history is bound to repeat itself. Once again, the West is looking forward to have (their darling) Khatami back as a “moderate” Islamic Republic president and prolong more time to develop its nuclear ambition. We must not forget that it was during this smiling Mullah’s Presidency, the rule of law was flaunted blatantly from day one. Thousands of dissident students, intellectuals and journalists were systematically arrested, imprisoned and tortured for the sole crime of speaking up against the repressive rule of the mullahs. Many are still languishing in prisons, some have died, and some have simply vanished with no records of what happened to them. Are you listening? Do you care?

During this turbaned fascist’s watch, many students’ lives were extinguished for daring to express their opposition to the stone-age regime. Shamelessly, during the July 9, 1999 students’ demonstration, for instance, this man called the Tehran University students “A bunch of hooligans,” while his storm-trooper hooligans, with police support, brutally attacked students in their dormitories throwing some students out of the windows of the dorm’s third floor. Later, he is welcomed at Harvard University to lecture its “hooligans” and faculty on practicing tolerance.

Prisoners of conscience were routinely tortured to extract confessions about the crimes they did not commit. Some of the victims were permanently incapacitated while others died under the brutal torture. Women prisoners were often subjected to even greater indignities than men by being raped before being executed, under the cover of marriage. A prison mullah performed the forced marriage ceremony to make it conform to the Islamic ethos.

Support for terrorism constituted a high priority. It extended not only to the neighboring countries, but also as far away as Latin America. Hezbollah in Lebanon was nurtured with funds, weapons and training. Hamas and the Islamic Jihad were assisted in numerous ways, and a professional army of Shiite Iraqis was trained and armed to be used in the present Iraqi theatre. Separately, Muqtada al-Sadr and his militia thugs—the Mahdi Army—is directly funded, armed and controlled by the present Islamic regime, a gift of the smiling Mullah to his successor—the rabid Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

In his devious attempt to lull the world into a false sense of security, the smiling Mullah floated the notion of “Dialogue of Civilization,” to appear as a man of reason who is willing to reconcile the differences between and among various civilizations through dialogue. This clever ploy was exposed as nothing more than an Islamofascist propaganda tool. In actuality, his side’s dialogue proved to be a diatribe against civilization."

...to the Iranian people, I say tonight: As you stand for your own liberty, America stands with you." — President Bush, in the State of the Union Address

For 8 years, President Bush promised the Iranian people that America would support them in their struggle for freedom, but did he? The Iranian people stood up firmly only to be hanged by the Islamic Republic executioners. Can President Obama outdo President Bush’s rhetoric, or does he really believe in his motto “Change -- Yes We Can?”

It would be wise and expedient for the community of nations and the newly elected President of the United States to show solidarity with the Iranian people and to implement maximum pressure against the illegitimate body of government calling itself the Islamic Republic of Iran to listen to the will of its citizens. The Islamic Republic hijackers must be forced to bow to the will of the Iranian people or there must be some sort of consequences.

There must not be, however, any compromise, any negotiation or any deals with the Islamists in Iran before making sure that the Iranian people are part of the equation. The era of mass politics, propaganda, nebulous sloganeering and magical solutions are over. It’s a do or die scenario for the Iranian people or perhaps for the people of the world. The Iranian people want nothing less than a complete regime change through the democratic process of a free referendum. We believe it is the surest, safest and the fastest way to achieve a democratic Iran and end the world’s nightmare of nuclear holocaust that is currently facing us all.

NO PEACE WITHOUT JUSTICE

Speaking at a convention for American Jewish leaders, Tzippi Livni said that "we need to give up half of the Land of Israel". She claims that in the interest of peace, Israel must surrender Judea and Samaria to the Arabs. For the sake of a peace, it is necessary to create a Palestinian state in the heart of the Land of Israel.

The Left is fond of saying that there is no peace without justice. There is no greater truth to that statement that in this case. An unjust peace is no peace at all. Peace is valuable yet it cannot come at an unreasonable price. Uprooting Jews from their land is too high a price to pay for peace.

To make Judea and Samaria jundenrein is the greatest perversion of history. These lands form the homeland of the Jewish people, where our ancestors, Patriarchs, prophets and kings dwelled. To uproot hundreds of thousands of Jews from their rightful homes and destroy flourishing communities is a betrayal of history and of the generations of Jews who yearned for the dream of Zion. Although we were forcibly removed from our land, we never vacated it in our hearts and souls. We continued to look longingly to the day when "our eyes will behold Your return to Zion in mercy", despite the oppression and degradation of exile. The Land of Israel belongs to the Jewish people by every conceivable historical, religious and political right. The Jewish people are the only nation to have roots in that land. Abraham is buried in Hebron, Jacob lived in Beit El and Joseph tended his sheep in Shechem (Nablus). When a certain prophet had his first revelation in Arabia, the Jewish people already had thousands of years of roots in the Land of Israel.

The Land of Israel is the inheritance of every single Jew around the world, and only the Jews. Every nation has its own land and no one would demand that it carve itself up to appease those who covet it. It would be unreasonable to expect the United States to offer Texas or Massachusetts to al-Qaeda in the hopes of peace. The United Kingdoms would never surrender London and France would never give away Paris. Similarly, Israel can never give away parts of Jerusalem. Jerusalem was, is and always will be a uniquely Jewish city. Catholicism is centered in Rome, Islam in Mecca and Judaism in Jerusalem. Jerusalem forms the basis of our national psyche. 3 times a day, looking eastward, a Jew pleads for the rebuilding of Jerusalem, as well as after he has had a meal and says Grace. We have ended our Passover seders and Yom Kippur fasts for 2000 years with the fervent prayer of "Next Year in Jerusalem!" At every Jewish wedding, the groom breaks a cup to remember the destruction of Jerusalem and pledges "if I forget thee, O Jerusalem, may my right hand forget its cunning."

The early Zionist pioneers had a slogan: "With fire Judea fell, and with fire Judea will arise." The dream of Zion could only be realized through the sweat and toil of the pioneers and settlers. The Jewish state only exists by virtue of the over 20 000 Jews who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of their people. Thousands of good Jews fell defending and liberating Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria. Only 40 years ago, tears streamed down the cheeks of even the most alienated and assimilated Jews as we were reunited with our Holy Temple Mount, with the Western Wall and with the Old City of Jerusalem. A nation that held faith for two millenia does not forget so quickly the pain that we felt when we were denied access to our most holy sites. We have not forgotten how the Jordanians forbade us access to the Western Wall, desecrated synagogues and study halls and used ancient Jewish cemeteries as latrines. Only a lunatic would advocate a return to this terrible and dark time.

The basis of peace is self-respect. A Jew with a modicum of Jewish pride would never part with his homeland for anything in the world. Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, Gaza, the Golan, Galilee, Negev and coastal plain all are an integral part of the Jewish homeland. A condition for peace cannot be the amputation of half of the Land of Israel and denial of the right of the Jewish to settle freely in their country. What is being challenged is the basic Jewish right to their own land as the world tries to herd the Jews of Israel into the Greater Tel-Aviv ghetto. What we fail to understand is that our right to Tel-Aviv, to Herzliah, to Be'er Shevah, is our right to Jerusalem, to Hebron, to Shechem, to every inch of the Land of Israel.

The Arabs have more than enough land for themselves. They occupy 99.5% of the Middle-East, and no one is challenging their claim to it. Yet Jews must stand up and assert our right to less than a percent of the land in the Middle-East. This is not a conflict over land as much as ideology. The Islamic supremacist ideology which demands that Jews be second-class citizens opposes Zionism, the most basic desire for a Jew to control his own destiny in his own sovereign state. If Tzippi or the Left were able to carry out their nefarious plans, G-d forbid, to expel the Jews of Judea and Samaria, it would mean the virtual end of the Zionist enterprise, of the building and settling, of the Ingathering of the Exiles, of the return of the Jewish people to its home and the hope for the Ultimate Redemption, may it be speedily in our days. I could think of no greater tragedy than for the Jews to come home after such a long exile and re-establish themselves only to be uprooted by corrupt leaders at the behest of anti-semitic governments.

This is a struggle of an indigenous people against the forces of a cruel occupation. Islamic imperialism cannot succeed in driving the Jews from our soil. The Jewish nation has survived far more powerful empires and powers. A nation with such deep roots cannot surrender before a non-entity, a pseudo-nation bent on its destruction. Peace will come one day in the Middle-East, but only when Arabs and Jews respect each other and each other's boundaries and borders. There are 22 Arabs countries and one Jewish country. That Jewish country exists and survives only by resting on the shoulders of our grandparents, good Jews who, in the ghettos and shtetls of Eastern Europe, in the mellahs of Morocco, exiled in Arab countries or under Christian rule, never forget that one day they would return to their home. To betray them would be a travesty, the height of injustice and cruelty. Every people is entitled to its own country, not least of which are the Jewish people, who have felt the pain and burn of being guests in a foreign land. There can be no negotiations, no compromise, no surrender on this most elementary point, our national aspirations and dreams. Such injustice cannot be tolerated. I hope for peace, but not for the fake "peace" promised by the Left, bathed in the blood of Jews. Peace will only come when the Jewish people are firmly planted in their land, as a Light unto the Nations. May that day come speedily in our days, amen.

IDF BOMBS SMUGGLING TUNNELS

IDF bombs smuggling tunnels in Gaza after 2 Qassams hit Negev

By Haaretz Service and The Associated Press

IAF jets bombed the Philadelphi route, an area of smuggling tunnels near Gaza's border with Egypt, for a second time on Monday in response to Qassam rocket fire that hit the Negev earlier in the day.

Israel's military said the strikes targeted tunnels used to smuggle weapons in from Egypt and was retaliation for the rocket attacks.

Palestinian rockets hit Israel Monday morning, as talks dragged on over a long-term truce that would bring quiet to Israel's south and the coastal territory.
Two rockets fired from Gaza hit southern Israel Monday, one exploding in an open area in the Sha'ar Hanegev region and the other hitting inside a kibbutz in the Sdot Negev region. No injuries were reported in either incident, but some property sustained damage.

Gaza rockets are a near-daily occurrence in southern Israel, even after the devastating three-week Israeli offensive in Gaza that was meant to bring a halt to the fire.

Israel ended its military offensive in Gaza on Jan. 18, and the territory's Islamic Hamas rulers declared a cease-fire the same day. But sporadic violence has continued as Egypt tries to mediate a long-term truce.

Despite announcements from Hamas late last week that a truce deal was imminent, no agreement has been reached. Hamas is demanding that Israel open Gaza's blockaded border crossings, but Israel says it will open the crossings only after Hamas releases Gilad Shalit, an Israeli tank crewman held by the group in Gaza since June, 2006.

Hamas wants Israel to release hundreds of prisoners in return for Shalit, including high-ranking militants and the masterminds of deadly suicide bombings.

Israel's top leadership is scheduled to meet this week to formulate a response to Hamas' demands.

Gaza man killed in accidental scrap metal recycling blast

Palestinian hospital officials said Monday that a 25-year-old Gaza man has been killed and five people have been wounded in a blast along the border with Israel.

Palestinian security officials said the explosion in the northern Gaza town of Beit Lahiya was caused when people who were melting down scrap metal for recycling inadvertently threw an explosive device into the fire.

Residents initially reported Monday that a shell exploded.

In other news, two rockets fired from Gaza in violation of an informal truce landed in Israel. No injuries were reported.

SUDAN REBEL LEADER MEETS TOP ISRAELI FEFENSE OFFICIAL

Sudan rebel leader meets top Israeli defense official

By Barak Ravid and Amos Harel, Haaretz Correspondents

Tags: Israel News, Sudan, Darfur

The leader of one of the rebel groups in Sudan's Darfur region visited Israel to request its support in the rebels' fight against the Sudanese government.

Abdel Wahid al-Nur is the head of the Sudan Liberation Movement. While in Israel, he met with Maj. Gen. (res.) Amos Gilad, who heads the Defense Ministry's political-security department. However, since he was not an official state guest, he did not meet with Foreign Ministry personnel.

Al-Nur came to Israel earlier this month at his own initiative, to attend the annual Herzliya Conference. He came with a group of European Jews, most of them French, who have been active on behalf of the Darfur refugees. He did not speak at any of the sessions, but did observe several.
At the conference, he was introduced to Gilad, and the two arranged a meeting, which took place a few days later at the Defense Ministry.

The ministry responded, "In the interests of national security, various and sundry meetings are held. We are not in the habit of giving responses after each of these meetings."

The Sudan Liberation Movement was founded in 1992. It is a secular group that opposes the Islamist regime of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, and its official stated goal is to turn Sudan into a democracy that grants equal rights to all its citizens. However, it also has a military wing that has been fighting government forces in Darfur since 2001.

Al-Nur fled to France in 2007 and has not been back to Sudan since then. He has won support from international human rights organizations and is considered very close to French Jewish philosopher Bernard-Henri Levy. In the past, he has spoken in favor of establishing diplomatic ties between Sudan and Israel, and a year ago, he even announced that his movement was opening an office in Tel Aviv, staffed by Sudanese refugees who found asylum in Israel after fleeing the massacres committed by Bashir's forces in Darfur. However, this was his first visit here.

Israel currently has more than 600 Darfur refugees, and Ehud Olmert's government decided to grant them all asylum and work permits. This decision was made in part because Bashir's government announced that any Sudanese refugee who set foot in Israel would be considered a "Mossad agent" and would therefore be sentenced to death should he or she ever return to Sudan.

PORTUGUESE CHEESE GETS KOSHER SEAL

For first time since Inquisition, Portuguese cheese gets kosher seal

By Cnaan Liphshiz

Tags: Israel news, Jewish World

For the first time since the Spanish Inquisition in Portugal, a dairy product has been given an official kosher certificate. The ground-breaking product is a hard, goat's milk cheese, manufactured by the descendant of Anusim (Jews who were forced to convert to Christianity).
Last year, Jose Braz, owner of the Queijos Braz factory, contacted Daniel Litwak, the chief rabbi of Portugal's second-largest city, Porto, and asked him to arrange a kashrut certificate for Serra da Estrela cheese, which Braz manufactures. Braz believes that his own family were members of Portugal's Jewish community in the 14th and 15th centuries, but like many others were forced to convert to escape persecution by the Inquisition.

"When I spoke to Jose, he told me he wanted to reconnect to his Jewish roots - this was the reason for contacting me," says Litwak, who was born in Argentina. "I was surprised because his brand was doing rather nicely all over Europe. He did not need the certificate to increase his turnover."
New York-born Michael Freund, the chairman of Shavei Israel, a Jerusalem-based organization that helps people with Jewish roots become more involved in their Jewish community, who immigrated to Israel some 10 years ago, told Haaretz that Portugal "is seeing a Jewish revival over the past few years."

"Recently, the first kosher wine in Portugal since the Inquisition has become available, then the first olive oil and now the cheese," Freund says. "I see a definite connection between how many of the Anusim are rediscovering their roots and the increased interest."

GAZA ARMS SMUGGLING

Dichter: Israel must take military action against Gaza arms smuggling

By Barak Ravid, Haaretz Correspondent

Tags: Gaza arms smuggling

Public Security Minister Avi Dichter urged the government to operate against the smuggling of weapons into the Gaza Strip using the same military techniques employed against rocket fire itself.

"Egyptian action is too slow and the government must set an appropriate policy for the Israel Defense Forces," he told ministers at the weekly cabinet meeting in Jerusalem.

According to Dichter, arms smuggling remains "Achilles Heel" of the situation in the coastal territory.
"We must not wait until rockets are fired on Yavneh," he said, referring to a central Israel town struck by rockets during the war with Gaza last month.

Shin Bet Chief Yuval Diskin said Sunday that there have been several instances of arms smuggling from Egypt into Gaza since the end of the war, amid Hamas' efforts to rehabilitate the smuggling tunnels bombed by Israel.

"The Egyptians are acting [against smuggling] pretty slowly," Diskin said. "But there seems to be a positive change."

Militant groups smuggle arms and ammunitions into Gaza through tunnels dug along the border with Egypt and on boats along the coast. Egypt, which has kept its Rafah border crossing with the coastal territory largely closed, has agreed to help stop the tunnel smuggling with international technical assistance.

While Egyptian forces frequently report finding and destroying tunnels on the border with Gaza, the tunnels are usually found empty. Arrests of Palestinians accused of smuggling or caught in the tunnels are rare.

MIEP GIES MARKS HER 100th BIRTHDAY

Woman who hid Anne Frank from the Nazis marks her 100th birthday

By The Associated Press

Tags: israel news, anne frank

Anne Frank called them the "Helpers". They provided food, books and good cheer while she and her family hid for two years from the Nazis in a tiny attic apartment.

On Sunday, the last surviving helper, Miep Gies, celebrates her 100th birthday, saying she has won more accolades for helping the Frank family than she deserved - as if, she says, she tried to save all the Jews of occupied Holland.

"This is very unfair. So many others have done the same or even far more dangerous work," she wrote in an e-mail to The Associated Press this week.
It was Gies who gathered up Anne's scattered papers and notebooks after the hiding place was raided in 1944. She locked them ? unread ? in a desk drawer to await the teenager's return.

Anne died of typhus in the German concentration camp of Bergen-Belsen seven months after her arrest. British and Canadian troops liberated the camp two weeks later.

Gies gave the collection to Anne's father Otto, the only survivor among the eight people who hid in the concealed attic of the canal-side warehouse. He published it in 1947, and it was released in English in 1952 as "The Diary of a Young Girl." Retitled "The Diary of Anne Frank," it was the first book about the Holocaust to win popular appeal, and has sold tens of millions of copies in dozens of languages.

As she looked forward to a quiet birthday with her son and three grandchildren, Gies paid tribute to the "unnamed heroes" who helped Dutch Jews escape the net during the five years of Nazi occupation.

"I would like to name one, my husband Jan. He was a resistance man who said nothing but did a lot. During the war he refused to say anything about his work, only that he might not come back one night. People like him existed in thousands but were never heard," she said.

Jan Gies, who was not one of the four office workers who supplied the Frank family with their daily needs, died in 1993.

Such people fought a lonely battle in the Netherlands. Historians say collaborators were many and anti-Nazi resistance was light. Of the prewar Jewish population of 140,000, some 107,000 were arrested and deported. The Red Cross says only 5,200 of them survived the war.

Like the Franks, about 24,000 Dutch Jews went into hiding, of which 8,000 were hunted down or betrayed in exchange for a bounty.

After the war, Gies worked for Otto Frank as he compiled and edited the diary, then devoted herself to talking about the diary and answering letters from around the world. After Frank's death in 1980, Gies continued to campaign against Holocaust-deniers and to refute allegations that the diary was a forgery.

Though she ended her travels years ago and no longer gives interviews, her son Paul Gies says his mother "still receives a sizable amount of mail which she masters together with a longtime family friend."

Miep Gies suffered a stroke in 1997 which has slightly affected her speech, but she is generally in good health, her son said in an e-mail. She spends her days at the apartment where she has lived since 2000 reading two newspapers and following television news and talk shows.

A new edition of her 1987 book "Anne Frank Remembered" is due to be published this year.

Gies was born in Austria, and came to the Netherlands at age 13 to escape food shortages and live with a foster family. In 1933 she was hired as an office assistant in Otto Frank's spice business. Frank asked her in July 1942 to help hide his family in the annex above the company's warehouse and to bring them food and supplies.

The family, joined by four other Jews, hid for 25 months before they were betrayed. Repeated investigations by police and historians failed to definitively identify who turned them in.

NOT ENOUGH !!!

ADL chief: Pope Bendedict's condemnation of Holocaust denial not enough

By Shlomo Shamir, Haaretz Correspondent

Tags: Jewish World, Abe Foxman

Abe Foxman, the head of the Anti-Defamation League, sought to temper the enthusiastic responses expressed by Jewish leaders following their meeting on Thursday with Pope Benedict XVI over the reinstatement of a bishop who denies the Holocaust.
"The problematic and controversial chapter of the church and the matter of Holocaust denial do not end with the pope's declaration condemning Holocaust denial," Foxman told Haaretz.
Foxman, who was present at the meeting in the Vatican, refused to echo the compliments which other Jewish leaders feted the pope over his forceful denunciations of Holocaust denial.
"A meeting between Jews and the pope is always an important, historic event," Foxman said. Yet, "as long as the church allows an anti-Semitic bishop who denies the Holocaust to continue in his post under the aegis of the church, this means that the church is saying one thing yet doing another.

" Foxman, himself a Holocaust survivor, seeks to emphasize that he appreciates the pope's condemnation and his moving statements on his planned visit to Israel. Yet, in his words, "you cannot say that you are against anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial when you allow an anti-Semitic bishop and Holocaust denier to continue serving in the clergy."

"The church gave the bishop enough time to recant," Foxman said. "But he asked for forgiveness only from the pope and he said he is waiting for proof that indeed six million Jews were murdered in the Holocaust and the Nazis used gas chambers."

"Holocaust denial is a crime by law in key countries," Foxman said. "Only after the church recants from the rehabilitation and restores his prior standing as excommunicated can we say that the matter of the church and Holocaust denial has been solved."

The ADL is the largest Jewish organization active in the United States.

Israeli Exoskeleton Suit Enables Paralayzed People To Walk

HUGO CHAVEZ AND ANTI-SEMITISM

Hugo Chavez And Anti-Semitism

Michael Rowan and Douglas E. Schoen,

To win votes, he's using Jews as a scapegoat.

Venezuela's Hugo Chávez has launched attacks against Jews in a campaign to win support for a Feb. 15 referendum that, if passed, would allow him to run for president for life.

On Jan. 22, vandals broke into Tiferet Israel, a Sephardic synagogue only a mile from Chávez's presidential palace in Caracas, trashing Torah scrolls and spray-painting the walls with threats of death for Jews and Israel.

While he lamented the synagogue attack in a one-line statement, for weeks beforehand Chavez had vociferously rallied his supporters to protest Israel's war in Gaza, which he called a "genocidal holocaust against the Palestinian people."

He also expelled Israel's ambassador and demanded the presidents of Israel and the U.S. be prosecuted for mass murder. Immediately afterward, a pro-Chávez Web site called for boycotting Venezuela's small Jewish community, expelling Jews from the country and launching protests against the Israeli embassy and Jewish synagogues.

That's just what happened. A week before the vandalism at Tiferet Israel, vandals covered the outside walls of the synagogue with insulting phrases while anti-Semitic demonstrators gathered at the Israeli embassy--and Chavez's police stood by silently. The synagogue's security cameras captured images of the violators, but Chávez's police confiscated the tapes for an investigation that produced no arrests. In the later break-in, those same security cameras were taken by the offenders, so police currently have no tapes available for review.

In any case, in Caracas, Chávez controls the police force, which he nationalized rather than let opposition Mayor Antonio Ledezma lead them. In fact, soon after that election, Chávez thugs took over Ledezma's mayoral office, saying it was "liberated for the revolution." Since then, the office-less mayor has been powerless to address the anti-Semitic attacks or anything else, while his mum police report only to Chávez.

This is not the first time Chávez has used Jews as a scapegoat. Several times in recent years his military police have invaded Jewish schools and community centers searching for weapons, assassination plots and regime change conspiracies; naturally, they found nothing. Nevertheless, Jews have been traumatized or silenced by this scaremongering, and thousands of them have left Venezuela.

Jewish fear of Chávez mushroomed in 2007, when he entered into $20 billion worth of joint ventures with Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, including a shared bank and an airline with opaque operations that is frequented by Hezbollah terrorists. Plus, the U.S. government has designated a Chávez diplomat in Lebanon and a travel agent in Caracas as Hezbollah operators.

Indeed, Chávez and Iran speak with one voice about Jews. Chávez is a vehement supporter of Iran's nuclear ambitions and is a frequent visitor to Iran and Syria. He tends to link Israel, the U.S. and Jews in a conspiracy to rule the world through war and capitalism.

In an infamous Christmas Eve speech several years ago, Chávez said the Jews killed Christ and have been gobbling up wealth and causing poverty and injustice worldwide ever since. Chávez has declared war against the U.S.' "evil empire" and sees Israel in the same way Ahmadinejad, his partner, does.

Voters are strongly against Chávez's election-for-life referendum, and Venezuela suffers from the worst inflation and corruption rates in the hemisphere--as well as the highest murder rate in the world. But Chávez might still rig the election so it appears he won it; he has total control over who votes and how they vote through centrally controlled electronic voting machines.

There's evidence that he switched the yes and no votes on a recall referendum in 2004, that he changed a 5% victory to a landslide 28% so he could claim a mandate for his revolution in 2006, and that he planned to rig a 13% margin rejecting his president-for-life referendum but then settled for a 1% loss when General Raul Baduel and hundreds of thousands of students demanded a fair count in 2007.

The anti-Semitic campaign could provide cover for Chávez's electoral legerdemain. Always in search of an enemy to blame for his failure at dealing with poverty and corruption, Chávez has steadily vanquished opposition political parties, while Chávez's "devil"--former president George W. Bush--has exited the scene.

In a shameless display of cynicism, Chávez wants to scare his dwindling supporters into believing that the Jews are going to destroy the revolution, assassinate him and take away whatever goodies he may hand out. Chávez figures enough voters might just fall for it, making him look like an underdog who has challenged those with money and power. Meanwhile, his strategic allies in Iran, Syria, Hezbollah and Hamas stay satisfied.

Chávez needs an enemy to blame for missing eggs and meat at the market, soaring prices, rampant unemployment and crime--and who better than the Jews?

BBC FIGHTS TO HIDE REPORT ON ANTI-ISRAEL BIAS

BBC Fights to Hide Report on Anti-Israel Bias

by Maayana Miskin

(IsraelNN.com) The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is fighting a court order that would force it to reveal an internal report on anti-Israel bias. The media giant has reportedly spent 200,000 British pounds (roughly $280,000) on the case.

The legal battle was started by attorney Steven Sugar of London, who contends that the report on bias in its coverage must be made public under the Freedom of Information Act. The 20,000-word report is rumored to have concluded that the BBC's coverage was biased against Israel, a conclusion that Sugar says is of public interest.

The BBC argues that the document is protected under a clause exempting information held for journalistic purposes from the Freedom of Information Act.

The case has been through Britain's Information Tribunal, High Court and Appeals Court, and will now return to the High Court. The most recent round, in the Appeals Court, ended in Sugar's favor.

The BBC has faced numerous charges of anti-Israel bias, including an official complaint from Israel in 2004 after correspondent Orla Guerin dismissed terrorists' use of a teenage would-be suicide bomber as “a picture that Israel wants the world to see.” In the complaint, Minister Natan Sharansky accused Guerin of anti-Semitism and “total identification with the goals and methods of Palestinian terrorist groups.”

In the previous year, Israel had temporarily boycotted the BBC over allegations made in a documentary on Israel's weapons arsenal.

"This is not an organization that is there to get the truth. It's there to level every real or imagined accusation against Israel,” Israeli press office director Danny Seaman said at the time.
The BBC recently aroused fury among pro-Gaza activists by announcing that it would not air an appeal for money for repairs following Israeli counterterrorism operations in the area because the appeal could undermine the station's objectivity. The decision was seen by some as a reaction to charges of anti-Israel bias during coverage of the Gaza fighting.

MODERN SEGREGATION HAS AN ISLAMIST FACE

Modern Segregation Has an Islamist Face

In the twentieth century, minority groups such as African-Americans struggled and sacrificed to achieve integration with the societies that had excluded them. In the twenty-first century, some Muslims hope to run history in reverse, demanding separation from their Western neighbors. Three news items highlight different stages and aspects of this phenomenon.

First, it has been revealed that a primary school in Sheffield, England, holds weekly Muslim-only assemblies. The arrangement became known due to the head mistress being forced out after she insisted on mixed gatherings instead:

A teacher, who asked not to be named, said: "The head inherited the separate assemblies and she took careful advice on what to do.

"But when she tried to stop them, she was accused of being a racist. She wanted to hold assemblies for all the pupils. That is what happens in most schools but some parents wanted things to stay as they were."

Accommodating separatism only serves to encourage the adherents of Islam described in the second article. Based on a new poll, many UK Muslims "want to create their own communities and remain segregated from British society," with 44% believing that "they should be free to develop along separate lines." The numbers are similar to those of previous surveys indicating that four in ten British Muslims would prefer to be governed by Shari'a law.

Responding to the revelation, English Democrats' chairman Robin Tilbrook said, "If people don't want to integrate, they shouldn't be here. It's not at all right to have what's really a sort of ghetto situation developing — it's going to lead to trouble."

The third story illustrates the "trouble" stemming from one such "ghetto situation." Specifically, a study has found that "radical Islamists have a stranglehold" on a section of Malmö, Sweden:
"Families who have just moved into the neighborhood and who have never been particularly religious or traditional claim that they led freer lives in their home country than in Rosengaard," the report said.

Muslim women who did not wear the veil in their home country were, for example, obliged to don it, according to the study.

The authors also singled out "cellar mosques" whose members serve as a kind of "thought police."

Abraham Lincoln warned that "a house divided against itself cannot stand." A century and a half later, the West must relearn this lesson — or risk similarly catastrophic results.

TOO MANY BUILDINGS DESTROYED

The IDF continues to investigate its behavior in the Gaza Operation. While the number of dead Palestinian non-combatants seems considerably lower than the unanimous reports in the media, it appears the destruction of property was greater than planned:
A military source involved in the investigation told Haaretz, "It's clear to us that in a small portion of the combat sectors immeasurable damage was caused, and that is very difficult to justify from a legal perspective, particularly if such justifications are called for in legal proceedings with international organizations."
Call me hard-hearted callous evil and mean, but I'm not overly perturbed by this. Lost human lives are lost forever; buildings can be rebuilt. That's what Iranian funds are for, not to mention the PA being one of the top recipients of international aid worldwide. After Israel left Gaza in 2005 the Palestinians held democratic elections and a majority chose Hamas, a stridently antisemitic party that proudly calls for the anihilation of Israel; its men then shot thousands of rockets and mortars at Israeli civilians from among the populace. The citizens of Gaza never voiced any noticeable objections.

AMNESTY ACCUSES HAMAS GUNMEN OF KILLINGS AND TORTURE

Amnesty accuses Hamas gunmen of killings and torture

LONDON (Reuters) - Amnesty International said on Tuesday Hamas fighters in the Gaza Strip had carried out killings, torture and abductions of people accused of helping Israel, during and after the recent Israeli offensive. At least two dozen men have been shot dead by Hamas gunmen and scores of others have been shot in the legs, knee-capped or injured in other ways intended to cause permanent disability, the human rights group said.

Others have been severely beaten, tortured or ill-treated, it said in a report.

Most were abducted from their homes and later dumped, dead or injured, in isolated areas, or found in the morgue of one of Gaza's hospitals. Some were shot dead in hospitals where they were receiving treatment for injuries, Amnesty said.

The abuses have taken place since the end of December 2008, during and after the 22-day Israeli military offensive which killed some 1,300 Palestinians, the rights group said.

Amnesty International called on Hamas, the Islamist group which runs the Gaza Strip, to end the alleged campaign immediately and to agree to the establishment of an independent national commission of experts to investigate them.

"It's not clear whether this was something that was ordered or the top leadership effectively losing control of the guys with the guns," said Donatella Rovera, an Amnesty researcher who wrote the report.

Asked for comment on the report, Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum said that, during the war, Israel deployed many informants to work against Hamas fighters and provided information that led to the killing of armed activists.

Hinting that some of those suspected of helping Israel were killed, he said: "There were also family feuds and people settling scores. Therefore, it is unjust to hold Hamas accountable for what happened."

"The government of national unity (Hamas) had the duty to implement the law and the resistance factions had the right to protect themselves," he said.

ESCAPED PRISONERS

The targets of the campaign by Hamas forces and militias include former detainees, accused of helping Israeli security forces, who escaped from Gaza's Central Prison when it was bombed by Israel on December 28, Amnesty said.

Others were former members of the Palestinian Authority security forces and other activists of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah party, a rival to Hamas, it said.

Hamas, which won a Palestinian parliamentary election in 2006, routed Fatah forces in Gaza to take over the territory a year later.

An Amnesty International fact-finding team which visited Gaza during and after the Israeli offensive recorded testimonies from a number of victims, as well as medical sources and eyewitnesses who corroborated their stories.

Scores of others were too afraid to speak publicly for fear of retribution by Hamas forces or militias, the group said.

Among cases investigated by Amnesty, it said three brothers from the Abu 'Ashbiyeh family, from Jabalia in northern Gaza, were killed within 24 hours of escaping from Gaza's Central Prison in December.

Another former detainee at the prison, Jamal al-Ghandour, aged in his mid-50s, was shot dead in his bed in al-Shifa hospital on December 28 by unmasked gunmen wearing plain clothes in front of relatives and other witnesses, it said.

Amnesty sought a meeting with Hamas to discuss the allegations but it was cancelled at the last minute, a spokeswoman for the group said. It would try to follow up on the report with Hamas, she said.
