Israel Matzav: The buycott comes to Cleveland

The buycott comes to Cleveland

The Cleveland Jewish community has countered a call by 'Palestinian' supporters to boycott Costco by buying dozens of bags of Israeli clementines.

Parents and students from the Agnon Jewish day school in Cleveland, Ohio purchased nearly 100 bags of Israeli grown clementine citrus fruits to counter a proposed boycott, according to the Cleveland Jewish News.

A group called the U.S. Campaign for the Academic & Cultural Boycott of Israel threatened the local Costco store with a boycott over the Israeli grown fruit.

According to Jerry Isaak-Shapiro, head of the Agnon school, “Purchasing a simple bag of fruit sends a very clear message to retailers like Costco and to the Israeli farmers and distributors who depend on foreign markets for their livelihood."

In response, Fred Elsner, general manager of the Mayfield Heights, Ohio branch of Costco, “We source products from all over the world. We’re merchants. We don’t get involved in politics.”

Indeed.
