Israel Matzav: Mitchell threatens Israel with aid money

Mitchell threatens Israel with aid money

His father, who was Irish, was adopted by a Lebanese family. His mother was Lebanese. If you needed a reminder where US Special Middle East envoy George Mitchell's sympathies lie, you got it on Friday night after the Sabbath started here in Israel.

On the eve of his visit to the Middle East, US special envoy George Mitchell threatened that his country would freeze its aid to Israel if the Jewish state failed to advance peace talks with the Palestinians and a two-state solution.

Mitchell clarified in an interview to the PBS network that the United States would use incentives or sanctions against both sides.

According to American law, Mitchell said, the US can freeze its support for aid to Israel. He added that all options must remain open and that the sides must be convinced about what their important interests are.

Earlier this week, Mitchell called Salam Fayyad an 'impressive leader' and said that Fayyad and Abu Mazen represented 'strong and effective leadership' for the 'Palestinian people.'

Mitchell is plainly interested in trying to railroad Israel into a 'settlement' that will leave the Jewish state extremely vulnerable. Obama and Clinton don't wish us much better.

What could go wrong?
