FBI video of a successful detonation of a "shoe bomb" similar to the one worn by Richard Reid and more recently by Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab.
Although, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab (aka. the Crotch Bomber) did not have the bomb in his shoe. That may explain how he managed to neuter himself
Authorities said Umar Farouk Abdulmutalla's device included a syringe and a condom filled with powder that the FBI determined to be PETN (pentaerythritol), a common explosive related to nitroglycerin, which was sewn into his underwear. The device contained approximately twice as much explosive as was used by convicted “shoe bomber” Richard Reid, and “could have blown a hole in the side of his Detroit-bound aircraft,”
