Breaking: Russian jet nearly crashes at Ben Gurion

A Russian commercial jet overshot the runway at Ben Gurion Airport within the last hour and nearly crashed onto the Jerusalem - Tel Aviv highway, which runs past the airport.

According to the report, the aircraft almost crashed into Route 1 - the road connecting Jerusalem and Tel Aviv - before air traffic controllers at Ben Gurion alerted the pilot to his mistake.

The passenger jet returned to its course and landed safely at the airport several minutes later.

An investigation was opened into the incident.

Israel Radio reports that the pilot did not understand the instructions that he was given by an air traffic controller.
