Love of the Land: The ADL Is Wrong: Boycotts Can Be Kosher

The ADL Is Wrong: Boycotts Can Be Kosher

A long simmering dispute about the level of anti-Israel and anti-Semitic incitement going on at the University of California at Irvine has prompted a debate between Jewish groups about the propriety of academic boycotts. After the latest incident in which heckler disrupted a speech being given by Michael Oren — Israel’s ambassador to the United States — at the school’s campus, the Zionist Organization of America has called for donors to cease making contributions to the institution and for students to stop applying to the school. But the Anti-Defamation League says this is a mistake, since such boycotts are a “double-edged sword that legitimizes a tactic so often used against Jews and Israel.”

The problem with UC Irvine goes deeper than just the bunch of loudmouths who interrupted Oren. For a number of years, the Irvine campus’s Muslim Student Union and its leftist allies have made the school a haven of Israel-and-Jew bashing without the university’s administration doing much or anything about it. The result has apparently been the creation of a hostile atmosphere for Jewish students. Repeated attempts to get the university to address the grievances of the Jewish community have failed. After years of talking about the problem, the ZOA has apparently concluded that the only thing the school will understand is a boycott that will bring home to them that their indulgence of radical anti-Israel and anti-Jewish elements has consequences. The ADL prefers to keep the lines of communications open with the university and, in its usual manner, spends as much time complimenting the administration for the little it has done as it does criticizing them for their obvious failures.

Love of the Land: Whither American Jewry?

Whither American Jewry?

During a recent speaking tour in Canada, MK Nahman Shai (Kadima) shocked some of his hosts when he said that his primary goal in politics today is to bring down the Netanyahu government. Although indelicate, Shai's comment was not surprising. Kadima is in the opposition. And like all opposition parties in all parliamentary democracies, the primary goal of its members is to bring down the government so that they can take power.

Given that this is the case, it is unsurprising that until this week, Kadima leader Tzipi Livni tried to blame Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu for US President Barack Obama's hostility towards Israel. Far more newsworthy than her criticism of Netanyahu was her public rebuke of Obama this week for his attempt to strong-arm Israel into barring Jewish construction in Jerusalem's Gilo neighborhood.

On Wednesday Livni said, "Gilo is part of the Israeli consensus... and it is important to understand this for all discussions of borders in any future agreement."

Indeed. There is an Israeli consensus. The Israeli consensus regarding Jerusalem is based among other things on the understanding that no nation can give up its capital city and survive.

Livni wants to be prime minister one day. For that to happen, Israel must survive until she wins an election. And Israel will not long survive if it surrenders its right to its capital.

One might have thought that American Jews could be counted on to stand by Israel on this issue. But then, one would be wrong.

FOR THE past six years, Republican Senator Sam Brownback has repeatedly submitted a bill to the US Senate that, if passed into law, would revoke the presidential waiver that has allowed successive presidents to refuse to implement the 1995 law requiring the State Department to move the US Embassy to Jerusalem. This year Brownback co-sponsored his bill with Independent Senator Joseph Lieberman. As luck would have it, the Brownback-Lieberman bill was submitted two weeks before Obama launched his latest campaign against Jewish building in Jerusalem.

ADL - The Problem is Arab Rejection of Israel

The Problem Isn't Settlements,
It's Arab Rejection of Israel

Israel Ad

We all support peace in the Middle East, but pressuring Israel, our vital friend and ally, will not bring success.

The obstacle to peace isn't Israel and the problem isn't settlements.

The greatest obstacle to peace is the Arab/Palestinian rejection of Israel's right to exist for over 60 years.

We need your help.

Sign our letter to President Obama. Tell him that the path to peace begins with Arab recognition of Israel.

An Israeli soldier is being held hostage by the terrorist organization Hamas since his capture in the summer of 2006. The continued captivity of this young man with little word as to his fate is unacceptable and a clear violation of international protocol.

Cpt. Gilad Shalit, 21, was kidnapped on June 25, 2006 during a cross-border attack by the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas on a military installation near Kibbutz Kerem Shalom in southern Israel. Two soldiers were killed and three wounded during the raid. Shalit is still being held by Hamas at an undisclosed location in the Gaza Strip.

On July 16, 2008, the bodies of Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev, the two Israeli soldiers kidnapped by Hezbollah from Israeli soil on July 12, 2006, were returned to Israel as part of a prisoner exchange. Their kidnapping sparked the 2006 Lebanon War. Over the two years the soldiers were held captive, Hezbollah never provided information as to the soldiers condition or fate. The return of their bodies was the first acknowledgement by Hezbollah that the soldiers were dead.

White Supremacists Celebrate Holocaust Museum Shooter Suspect as a Martyr and Hero

White Supremacists Celebrate Holocaust Museum Shooter Suspect as a Martyr and Hero

Posted: June 11, 2009

Following the shooting at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., white supremacists and anti-Semites lauded the suspect, James Von Brunn, a longtime neo-Nazi and white supremacist, as a hero and a martyr.

Although he was a peripheral figure in the movement, Von Brunn was respected by fellow white supremacists for his anti-Semitic and racist views, which he has expressed for decades. After the shootings, he was lauded in posts to white supremacist and anti-Semitic Web sites as “an exemplar of the warrior spirit within every White person.”

One individual called himself a “recruit” as a result of the shooting. Other extremists warned that similar attacks are forthcoming and, more specifically, that “filthy jews need to know that they are not safe anywhere.”

Praise for Von Brunn is not new; though he was a peripheral figure in the movement, Von Brunn was respected by fellow white supremacists as he had expressed his vehement anti-Semitic and racist views for decades.

Giving some insight into what might have driven Von Brunn to allegedly take action at the museum, acquaintance and white supremacist John de Nugent cited, as one factor, the election of President Barack Obama as a “tremendous signal of alarm” for Von Brunn. Rage among white supremacists has escalated considerably, as they view the election of a black man as a sign that white people are losing power.

The following is a series of comments taken from white supremacist Web sites in response to the shooting:

Shooting At U.S. Holocaust Museum Part Of A 'Wave Of Hate' Against Jews

New York, NY, June 11, 2009 … The shooting at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum by a white supremacist and anti-Semite is not an isolated incident, but is part of a "wave of hate" targeting Jews and others, according to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which monitors and fights anti-Semitism and extremism.

"The shooting at the Holocaust Museum is part of a wave of hate targeting Jews and Jewish institutions and others," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. "It serves as a painful reminder that the anti-Semites and racists are still out there, and are more prone to act out on their beliefs."

ADL Applauds Law Enforcement for Arrests of Homegrown Terrorists in Plot to Blow Up New York City Synagogues

New York, NY, May 21, 2009 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today applauded local and federal law enforcement for thwarting a plot to bomb two synagogues in New York City.
