Dore Gold on Iran
At a dinner with journalists on Monday, former Israeli ambassador to the UN Dore Gold (rumored to have been a college classmate of mine), who has just written a book on a nuclear Iran, talks about dealing with a nuclear Iran:Engagement with Iran is not working," he said. "What's Plan B for the West?" He warns that relying on deterrent power, as if this were the Cold War, "is a disaster for the world." He does not believe that an Iranian nuclear attack on Israel is imminent: "The most likely scenario is that Iran provides a nuclear umbrella to global Islamic terrorism. Can NATO retaliate against a nuclear Iran the way it did against the Taliban in Afghanistan?" He criticized American liberals for not taking the threat of Iran seriously, and said that conservatives aren't taking it seriously enough either. "You can watch Fox News all day and never see a discussion of Iran," he said. As for the mood of Israeli's today: "We're feeling very much alone."
For now, an Iranian nuclear attack on Israel may not be imminent. But Hamas and Hezbullah with a nuclear umbrella is not exactly a picnic either. I don't believe Israel can let things get to that stage and continue to live a normal life. I believe that our government will go after Iran before that happens.
Will the United States support us? From a planning perspective, it doesn't matter. Israel has to do whatever is necessary to protect itself.
