Russia upgrading naval bases in Syria
Russia is upgrading a naval base in the Syrian port of Tartus on the Mediterranean Sea. The base is ostensibly to be used to support Russian naval anti-piracy operations off Somalia, but the real reason is apparently to re-assert itself in the Middle East. Israel is not thrilled. The source said the base, established during the Cold War but little used since, would support Russia's anti-piracy operations off Somalia.
